BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT THE FIRST COMPUTER MOUSE

THE FIRST COMPUTER MOUSE WAS INVENTED BY DOUGLAS ENGELBART IN THE 1960S AS PART OF HIS WORK AT THE STANFORD RESEARCH INSTITUTE (NOW SRI INTERNATIONAL). ENGELBART, ALONG WITH HIS COLLEAGUE BILL ENGLISH, DEVELOPED THE FIRST PROTOTYPE IN 1964-1965, WHICH CONSISTED OF A WOODEN SHELL WITH TWO METAL WHEELS THAT COULD ROLL IN ANY DIRECTION. THIS DEVICE WAS INITIALLY REFERRED TO AS AN "X-Y POSITION INDICATOR FOR A DISPLAY SYSTEM."


THE TERM "MOUSE" WAS COINED BY ENGELBART'S COLLEAGUE, ROGER BATES, DUE TO THE RESEMBLANCE OF THE DEVICE'S CORD TO A MOUSE'S TAIL. THE FIRST PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION OF THE MOUSE OCCURRED ON DECEMBER 9, 1968, DURING ENGELBART'S PRESENTATION AT THE FALL JOINT COMPUTER CONFERENCE IN SAN FRANCISCO. THIS DEMONSTRATION ALSO INTRODUCED OTHER GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGIES, SUCH AS HYPERTEXT, COLLABORATIVE EDITING, AND VIDEO CONFERENCING, MAKING IT A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN THE HISTORY OF COMPUTING.


THE MOUSE GAINED TRACTION IN THE 1970S WHEN IT WAS ADOPTED BY XEROX PARC (PALO ALTO RESEARCH CENTER) AND FURTHER DEVELOPED INTO A MORE PRACTICAL AND ERGONOMIC DESIGN.
